My Trading Journal (Excel Spreadsheet)
by Michael on January 17, 2006

I’ve had a few requests for a copy of the spreadsheet I use for my trading journal. I just uploaded it to the server so feel free to snag a copy if you’re interested. It’s not the most elegant spreadsheet but it does what I need. I’ve never been a big Excel guy, (unlike some people who have nice, fancy trading journals) so I had to use brute force to get some things done.

About Callpix.com

Callpix.com picks calls!

How to use this website and the history of callpix.com.

When I first started with equities and deriviatives, I wrote this website to help me find good covered call picks. My program scans over the day's option prices to find high volume stocks with call options being written on them, then I rank them by the option premium, divided by the price, to find the highest paying premium rate. That's the way I rank them on my website still.

But of course, the highest paying covered call contract probably has too much risk, that's why it pays so well; you get paid to suffer that risk.

In the world of investing, nothing is as tried and true as index fund investing. Investing in an index mutual fund or ETF is a form of passive investing. The primary advantage to such a strategy is the lower management expense ratio on an index fund and the ability to "buy the market" with one ticker or fund.

Welcome to 2010! Here's to a great trading year. For our first Real-World Trading series, we will discuss a credit spread. This strategy is a high probability strategy, but is not meant to hit home runs. The two credit spreads we will discuss are the bull put spread and the bear call spread. Both of these have the same risk profile, which is a high probability of profit with limited risk. We will discuss the make-up of these credit spreads this week and then choose a credit spread to place a Real-World trade on next week."

Iron Condor » Options Trading Strategies – Book Review – Guy Cohen, The Bible of Options Strategies
Most trading literature on option strategies tend to lean towards mathematical formulas to define the construction of a spread. Guy Cohen has chosen to use pictorial logic, even with the Greeks unique to a particular strategy, to piece together the legs of a spread with diagrams.Diagrams that connect with each other are a much more intuitive way to learn for those less inclined to numerical formulas. Still, the logic of the math remains robust and intact. The layout of the book makes it easy to navigate around the text.

A credit spread is a type of vertical spread. It is a trading strategy in which you are buying an option, call or put, at a certain strike price, and simultaneously selling the same type of option at a different strike price of the same month. The sold strike price must have a higher value thus creating a credit at the time the trade is placed.

How to Trade Credit Spreads

How to Trade Credit Spreads
Options Strategies: Credit Spreads

The market's up, the market's down. The constant fluctuation of the market as it searches for a direction has left more than one seasoned investor scratching his head in frustration. Yet, options can help to alleviate some of that anxiety. They can easily make money in bull or bear markets, and can serve as hedges on existing positions. Furthermore, the capital outlay for an options trade tends to be less than a traditional stock purchase. In this day and age, you can't afford to ignore the potential of equity options.
